How Do The Arts Benefit Our Children?
Documentation on the impact of the arts on our children’s well-being and their
education continues to grow. Studies have shown that the arts have a dramatic
positive impact on learning, in both academic and social areas, when students
have had long-term exposure to arts-integrated curricula or arts-infused programs
outside their schools. An analysis of a US Department of Education study of
25,000 students revealed that, “students with a high level of arts participation
outperform arts-poor students by virtually every measure. Children who receive
arts-integrated education develop quick minds, discipline, focus, judgment,
personal drive, experience in teamwork, attention to detail, grasp of the big-
picture, and an essential urge to continue learning. In addition to strengthening
young people’s capacity to learn, engaging in the arts allows them to have a
positive outlet for their boundless energy and imagination. By cultivating their joy,
talent and voices, our children become better citizens.

How Do The Arts Benefit Adults?
We do not believe that age should be a limiting factor in either arts education or
exposure to the arts. Adults can reap the same benefits from arts education as
can our children. Recall that the popular Anna Mary Robertson Moses, known as
“Grandma Moses,” began to paint country scenes from her childhood at about the
age of 75, when arthritis made it difficult for her to sew. Her success late in life can
be an inspiration to us all.

Why I Should Be Concerned?
Even if you have never attended an arts event, it is important to know that the arts
have a tremendous impact on the growth and development of a region. A recent
national survey(1) revealed that the cultural amenities of a region were the third-
most important factor considered by large corporations.

The arts are increasingly more important in the recruitment and retention of
qualified employees. In Megatrends, and the follow-up Megatrends 2000, author
John Naisbett reaffirms that a flourishing arts environment is fundamental to both
corporations and individuals when location is being decided. The arts offer
networking opportunities, stimulate creative thinking and problem solving, impact
travel and tourism and encourage business development.

The economic impact of the non-profit arts industry on the US economy is
phenomenal, generating $134 billion in economic activity every year, including
$24.4 billion in federal, state and local tax revenues. The $134 billion total
includes $53.2 billion in spending by arts organizations and $80.8 billion in event-
related spending by arts audiences. The $134 billion in total economic activity has
a significant national impact, generating 4.85 million full-time equivalent jobs;
$89.4 billion in household income; $6.6 billion in local government tax revenues;
$7.3 billion in state government tax revenues; and $10.5 billion in federal income
tax revenues.(2) In short, the arts are a basic component of vital communities,
revitalizing neighborhoods, improving education and encouraging new investment.

In an environment that has seen government funding cut to bare bones for arts
education in our schools and communities, ArtStart strives to provide quality
educational opportunities in the arts to stimulate creativity, and to further enhance
community development and cohesiveness.
